Picture-in-picture (PiP) mode in the studio allows you to switch tabs or windows while keeping the conversation visible in a floating window. This helps you stay engaged in the meeting while navigating to other tabs or windows.

Enable automatic picture-in-picture
Before using PiP mode, you are prompted to grant Riverside permission to enable it automatically.
Once activated, PiP mode will launch whenever you switch tabs during a studio session. Your video will detach into a small, movable window that stays visible as you navigate other content.
Additional actions
To move the PiP window to any corner of your screen, click and drag its address tab.
- To resize the PiP window, click and drag its edges.
- To close the PiP window, click the
Exit icon in its top right corner.
Disable automatic picture-in-picture
- In the browser's address bar, click the
permissions icon or the
camera icon to the left of the website URL.

When using picture-in-picture mode, you can still:
- Turn your camera and mic on or off.
- Start and stop recordings.

Share your screen.
- From the PiP window, you can take over screen sharing. The host cannot prevent a guest from taking over.
- Share a presentation.
- Leave the studio.
- Add visual effects and virtual backgrounds.

Accept guests waiting in the lobby.

Picture-in-picture (mini studio) in the Mac app
The mini studio makes screen sharing easier in the Mac app by detaching the studio into a small, movable window. It remains visible while you present your device’s screen and lets you switch between windows while keeping the conversation in view.
To use the mini studio:
- Using the Mac app, join a Riverside studio.
- At the bottom of the screen, click the Share icon and choose Screen.
This automatically switches to mini studio.

You can also switch manually by clicking the
Switch to mini studio icon In the top-right corner of the studio.
- To return to full view, click the
Switch to full studio icon.
Additional actions
- To move the mini studio to any corner of your screen, click and drag its top bar.
- To close the mini studio window, click the
Exit icon in its top-left corner.
Good to know
- The mini studio does not remain visible when you switch to your web browser.
- You cannot resize the mini studio.
Good to know
- If Riverside detects that picture-in-picture mode is straining your device, it automatically closes the PiP window and returns you to the main studio tab to preserve recording quality. A pop-up message notifies you when this happens.
- PiP mode can only be enabled when using supported browsers.
