About auto volume control (audio normalization)

Auto volume control (also known as audio normalization) ensures that all studio participants’ voices are played back at a consistent volume.

In a typical remote recording setup, participants use different microphones and audio settings, often resulting in imbalanced input levels. While post-production tools can correct these inconsistencies in the final recording, they cannot fix volume mismatches during the live session.
To address this, Riverside performs level normalization. It estimates each speaker’s average loudness and applies a gain adjustment to match a target level of –22 dBFS RMS, a standardized measure of audio loudness.

  • Auto volume control does not change your system input volume or microphone gain. It only adjusts the audio after it has been captured by the microphone.

  • Auto volume control affects only live call audio and cloud recordings. It does not apply to the locally recorded high-quality tracks.

  • Auto volume control is disabled by default. You can turn it on if you prefer to have participant audio automatically normalized to a target loudness level.
