The Riverside editor has been rebuilt from the ground up with a new timeline, redesigned navigation, and more flexibility for cutting, arranging, and customizing your content. Every interaction should feel noticeably faster and more responsive. This article covers what's changed so you can get oriented quickly.
Timeline changes
Cuts on the timeline
Cut sections are now removed from the timeline entirely, so you only see the parts you are actually using, with no scrolling through long, grayed-out sections. When you create a new edit from a section of your transcript or timeline, or edit a Hook, Clip, or Segment, only that content is shown, making it much easier to stay focused when editing.
Move tracks around freely
You can now move any track, or any section of a track, freely on the timeline. Previously, tracks were fixed in place. This is useful for all kinds of timing adjustments, like shifting a guest's response slightly later to remove an overlap with the host.
Split any track
You can now split any track, including text, image, and video overlays and music tracks. Previously this was only possible with audio and video tracks. This gives you much more control over timing, whether you want to pause a music track mid-scene, break up a video overlay, or adjust when a text element appears and disappears.
Copy & paste anything
Highlight any section of a track and copy and paste it anywhere on the timeline. Previously, you had to copy from the transcript. This is great for reusing strong moments, like copying a highlight and pasting it at the beginning as a hook.
Snapping
Overlays now snap to cuts, scenes, and sections allowing for more precise timing. Additionally, scenes snap to overlays and cuts, great for timing overlays to appear on scene changes or hiding jump cuts with scene changes.
Collapsed vs. expanded timeline view
The timeline has 2 views that affect how much control you have when editing.
- In the collapsed view, everything stays in sync automatically. Deleting a section causes the surrounding content to snap together.
- In the expanded view, you have full manual control and can move tracks independently. Keep in mind this can take things out of sync.
Time ruler
A time ruler has been added to the timeline so you can always see where you are no matter how zoomed in you are.
Flexible volume control
When working in expanded track view, you can now control the volume of individual sections within a track. And if you later adjust the overall volume of the recording, any section-level adjustments you've made will scale proportionally.
Multi select
Select multiple elements - including image, video, and text overlays - on the timeline to drag them all at the same time.
Resize the transcript and timeline
Customize your workspace by resizing the transcript and timeline to fit your workflow.
Transcript editing
Transcript editing now feels more like editing a regular document, with improved cursor placement and keyboard shortcuts that make the experience significantly smoother and more intuitive.
Layouts & design
Flexible layouts on the canvas
You can now freely move and resize speaker tiles on the canvas to create custom layouts, then save them and reuse them across your edit. In the previous editor, layout options were limited to a set of predefined templates.
Layering
You can now control the layering of elements on your canvas, like placing an image behind a speaker tile. Previously, the order was fixed and speakers would always appear behind any image.
Layouts tab
The Layouts tool has been moved. To apply a layout to a scene, use the menu above the canvas. To apply Smart Layouts, go to the AI tools tab in the editor toolbar.
Design customization
You can now adjust corner radius and spacing exactly the way you want using a slider or inserting the exact value. In the previous editor, you could only choose from a set of predefined values.
Scenes & transitions
Scenes
Scenes function mostly the same way as before, which enables you to control how your canvas looks at a given time, like layouts, captions, and design.
The main changes we've made to scenes are:
- Scenes have their own layer in the timeline
- You can drag scenes and it will bring the content in that scene with it
As a reminder: when you apply Smart Layouts, a new scene is created for every layout change. To manually create a layout change, just create a new scene.
Transitions
Transitions are now applied between scenes, instead of between sections on the timeline as they were in the previous editor.
Navigation changes
A few things have moved in the new editor:
- The editor toolbar has moved to the left side. Previously it was on the right.
- Chapters no longer appear on the timeline. You can view them in the transcript or click the
chapters icon above the timeline.
- Co-creator is now accessible from the top right corner of the new editor. Previously it was in the AI tools tab.
- There's now a dedicated comments panel on the right, so you can see all your comments in one place, as well as in the transcript and timeline. You can also hide comments from the timeline and transcript in the panel's settings.
