Remove filler words

Remove distracting filler words like "um," "uh," and "you know" in a single click to improve the flow of your conversation.

Riverside detects filler words and highlights them in the transcript, so you can listen to each one in context and decide whether to remove it or keep it. You can also remove them all at once.

Step by step

Review and remove filler words

1. Log in to your Riverside account.
2. Open a recording in the editor or upload an external file to start editing.

3. On the editor toolbar, click AI tools.
4. Next to Remove filler words, click Review.
   A panel opens that shows a card for each filler, with its timestamp and the surrounding transcript text. Fillers are also highlighted in yellow in the transcript.
5. To choose which fillers to review, click All fillers and select the filler types:
   • Filler words: "um," "uh," and "hmm"
   • Contextual fillers: words like "like," "you know," and "I mean," flagged only when used as a filler
   • Noises: sounds like breaths that appear as a squiggle in the transcript
   • Screen share & media: fillers that occur during a screen share or media file. Removing these fillers also cuts the screen share or media at that point.
   • Harsh cuts: fillers that may clip nearby words. Removing these fillers can cut off the start or end of the words around them.
6. To hear a filler in context, click its card.
   The playhead moves to the filler and plays it with a few seconds of audio before and after.
7. Choose what to do with each filler:
   • To remove the word, click the Accept icon.
   • To keep the filler as spoken, click the x Discard icon.
8. To remove every filler still waiting for review, click Remove all.

Restore all filler words

1. On the editor toolbar, click AI tools.
2. Next to Remove filler words, click Review.
3. At the bottom of the panel, click Restore all.

Restore a specific filler word

1. Make sure your transcript shows deleted text.
2. Click on the removed filler word in the transcript.
   Filler words you removed are shown in gray with a strikethrough . 
3. Click Restore.

Good to know

• Your filler type and filter choices apply to the current edit only.
• Some filler words may not be recognized by the system as such. In these cases, they appear in the transcript as a squiggle, which is used to represent a noise picked up by the microphone.
