A

AI Show Notes
Feature that analyzes the recording's transcript to generate a description, chapters, and takeaways.

AI Translation
Riverside's AI translation seamlessly converts your recordings into 30 languages. It preserves speakers' voices while syncing their lip movements to the new audio track. 

AI Voice
Use text to generate an audio sample that simulates your speaking voice. You can only create AI voice recordings with your own, authenticated voice.

Aligned Track File (MP4 / WAV)
An uncompressed media file that includes empty space at the beginning of the track to sync with other separate tracks when imported to editing software. Aligned audio (WAV) tracks are available when a studio is set to record Audio Only.

All Participants Cloud Recording
A backup file that contains the audio and/or video of a session's recorded participants in one MP4 file.

Async Recording
A participant can record by themselves and share the footage with the host afterward.

Audience Member
Participant role that allows people to watch the recording session in the studio. They are not recorded unless granted permission during a Live Call-In.

Audiogram
Turn your audio-only recording into a shareable video by adding visual elements to it, such as a background, logo, captions, text, or images.

Audio Input Device
Microphone or virtual mic used during a studio recording session.

Audio Interface
Hardware that connects one or more microphones to a computer (usually via USB). It converts the mic's analog signal into a digital signal.

Audio Mixer
Hardware or software that combines the signals from one or more microphones and allows each input signal to be adjusted in real-time during a performance or recording session.

Audio Output Device
Speakers or headphones used during a studio recording session.

Audio Sample Rate
Number of times an audio signal is digitally sampled per second. Riverside's default audio sample rate is 44.1 kHz but it can be changed to 48 kHz.


B

Bitrate
The number of bits per second that are recorded in a media file. Typically, a higher bitrate leads to larger files with higher quality. For audio, Riverside uses Linear PCM, up to a 16 bit depth.

Bit Depth
The number of bits of information in each sample, in other words, the amount of information that can be stored in each sample. Bit depth does not affect sound quality.

Business plan
Riverside for Business plans let multiple people collaborate closely on projects together and include different permissions for the members of the team as well as a Customer Success Manager. (Previously called a Teams account.)


C

Chapter
Use Chapters in Riverside's Editor to quickly navigate, group, and rearrange your content.

Clipping
Audio distortion and reduced quality that occurs when an audio signal is louder than the allowed limit. This is shown from the participant's volume meter in the studio's sidebar.

Cloud Recording
Internet-based files of the session's recorded audio and video, useful as a backup. The quality of each person's depends on their internet connection during the studio session. (Also called an internet backup track.)

Constant Frame Rate
In the studio, Riverside records participants' video tracks with the same amount of frames per second so the videos can be more easily imported to desktop editing software.

Content planner
Your content calendar where you can schedule and manage all of your Riverside content in one place. 

Continuity Camera
With Apple's Continuity Camera, you can use your iPhone as a webcam when you record from a Mac computer browser.


D

Dashboard
Pages on Riverside where you can create new studios, adjust studio settings, access past recordings, share recorded files, and change your account settings.


E

Echo Cancellation 
If you are not using headphones, this limits how much the audio of other participants is picked up by your microphone to reduce audio feedback in the studio.

Edit
A media file generated after each recording session, including all participants' individual recording tracks.

Editor
Use Riverside's robust editor to turn your recording into engaging content.

Episode ID
Each episode you create in Riverside hosting has a unique ID that the Support team can use to access its technical details.

External Mic
A microphone connected to a computer or mobile device, rather than an audio input that is built into the computer or mobile device.


F

Frame Rate
The rate at which individual image frames are recorded or displayed in a video to simulate movement, such as 24, 25, or 29.97 frames per second (FPS).

Free plan
An individual Riverside plan that is free for users and includes basic features with limitations on track hours.


G

Guest
A participant who is invited to a Riverside studio and recorded.


H

High-Quality Track
Media files that are locally recorded by a participant's computer or device. Unlike Cloud Recording files, these tracks are not impacted by a participant's slow internet connection.

Host
The recorded participant in a Riverside studio who has full control over a session and its settings.


I

Individual Account
A Riverside account owned and managed by a single person.

Input Monitoring
Riverside does not (yet!) support the ability to hear the audio as you record.


L

Latency
The time a signal takes to travel to a device which processes and records or broadcasts it, similar to lag or delay. Also a factor during a live stream.

Linear PCM
Recordings on Riverside use this method to save uncompressed high-quality audio. (See also Bitrate, above.)

Live Call-In
A feature in the Riverside studio that allows audience members request to join the conversation and be recorded like other invited guests.

Live stream
The act of broadcasting a recording session in real-time from the Riverside Studio to external platforms (such as YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook) so viewers can watch the session as it happens.

Local Recording
A recording that takes place on the computer or device instead of over the internet. This recording is in studio quality and won't include the disruptions caused by bad internet connection. For each guest, you can download a separate locally recorded track.

Lobby
Before joining a studio, participants enter a display name and select the mic, camera, and speaker to use during the recording on this page. (Also known as the Green Room.)

Lower thirds
Lower thirds are graphics placed in the lower section of a video screen. In the Riverside studio, you can add and customize participant names, titles, clickable links, participant names, titles, and social media handles.


M

Magic Audio
Enhances your audio tracks with AI so you get a sharp, studio-quality sound.

Magic Clips
Feature that employs AI to find and extract the most shareable clips from a recording longer than 3 minutes.

Media Board
Studio feature where the studio's host can upload and play video and audio content during recording sessions; the media is available as a separate track download after the session.

Multicam mode
Use a mobile device as a second camera to capture an additional video angle during a studio session.


N

Noise Reduction
If enabled when recording, this setting lessens background noises such as AC fans, heaters, and other ambient sounds on the separated tracks of all studio participants.

Normalize audio levels
When exporting an edit or recording from the editor, this option equalizes the audio levels of the participants to bring them within the same volume range.


O

Omnichat (Live stream chat)
While you're live streaming, omnichat integrates all live messages sent from viewers watching on different channels into the Riverside chat, eliminating the need to monitor comments on each separate platform you are streaming to.


P

Participant Role
Each person in a recording session joins the studio in a specific role—host, guest, producer, or audience member—and has different abilities in the studio depending on their role.

Podcast ID
Each podcast you set up in Riverside hosting has a unique ID that the Support team can use to access its technical details

Private studio
Studio setting that, when enabled, prevents audience members from watching a recording session live, even if they have an invite link for that studio from a prior session.

Production
Riverside for Business users can use productions to organize content on the highest level. Within a production, you can add a logo, set custom file names, and customize each studio's settings differently.

Producer
A studio participant who monitors and assists the recording session with similar abilities as the host. The producer is not recorded and a local high-quality track is not created for them.

Project
A project stores all the content and assets you create from a recording in one place, like a folder. You can group your work by recordings, AI-generated content, edits, and exports

Public chat
A chat interface in the Riverside studio that allows audience members viewing a webinar on Riverside to interact with each other and the host in real time.

Public studio
Studio setting that, when enabled, allows anyone with an audience invite link to watch the recording session live. When this is not enabled, audience members cannot enter the studio.


R

Recording
A Riverside studio creates a new recording each time the host starts and stops a recording session.  Each recording includes separate high-quality tracks of the recorded participants and additional files such as transcriptions and extra media.

Recording ID
A unique, 32-character code that helps Riverside's Support team check your recording and provide assistance.

Registered audience member
An audience member who provides their information and receives a unique link to join a webinar.

Remove filler words
Remove distracting filler words like "um", "so", "uh", from your recording to improve the flow of your conversation in a single click.

Remove pauses
Remove all the pauses, gaps, and silences identified in your recording with one click.

Resolution (video)
The number of pixels a digital video can display, expressed as width × height, such as 1920 × 1080. You can change a studio's default maximum recording resolution, however the resolution of the final high- quality track may depend on the capabilities of a participant's camera.

RSS feed
A structured file that contains all the information about your show, including episode titles, descriptions, audio file locations, cover art, and metadata.

RSS URL
The podcast RSS URL is a web link that points to your podcast's RSS feed. 

RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol)
A protocol used to send audio and video data over the internet in real-time. In Riverside, it allows users to stream to platforms that are not natively integrated by manually inputting a Stream URL and Stream Key.


S

Screen share
The studio's host, guests, and producers can share a program's window, a browser tab, or their entire desktop screen with other participants during a recording. The shared screen is recorded as a separate video track and can be downloaded.

SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management)
Set up SCIM provisioning to let your IT team automatically sync users from your identity provider (IdP) directly into Riverside.

Script
In-studio feature that allows hosts to write notes that only they will see during the recording.

Separate track
Audio/video that is recorded locally on each participant's device and is not affected by their internet connection.

Smart Mute
Smart Mute automatically mutes anyone not speaking and removes ambient sounds, such as a noisy fan or other unwanted background noise.

Smart Layouts
Smart Layouts identifies the main speaker, based on speech and head nods, to automatically apply scenes and layouts to capture key moments in your video.

Sound bleed
Leakage of one audio output into another audio input that can cause an echo, such as your microphone picking up the sound of your headphones or speakers. Also known as audio spill or leak.

Spotify for Creators
A service for creators to host and distribute podcasts. It also integrates Riverside's studio and editor.

Stream key
A streaming platform provides this unique code, similar to a password, so Riverside can connect and send your multimedia stream to the correct video page or post.

Stream URL
Together with the Stream Key, Riverside uses this specific web address to send a multimedia live stream to another platform like YouTube or LinkedIn.

Studio
With any Riverside account, you can create your own audio and video content in your virtual recording studio. You can think of your studio as a "place" where you and your participants can record any number of times together.

Studio sidebar
The panel on the right side of the computer browser's recording studio with key information about the current recording, participants, and text chat.


T

Timecode
In a SVG transcript file, these numbers tell media players when to display the caption text during playback.

Track ID
A short identifier assigned to every recorded track file (a participant's display name followed by a series of numbers of letters) that helps Riverside's Support team provide assistance.


U

Upload control
Setting that allows the host or producer to pause the automatic track upload of a participant to preserve their internet bandwidth during the studio session.

Upload page
Web page on Riverside.com that automatically checks for any track uploads still in progress after a recording session on a participant's computer and completes them.


V

Video frame
Each participant's video is displayed in a frame (or 'tile') that you can expand, reposition, or make fullscreen. The frame shows a participant's initials if their camera is turned off or they have an unstable internet connection.

Video input device
External camera, webcam, or virtual camera used during your recording session.

Viewers (Live stream)
Individuals watching the session broadcast on an external platform (like YouTube or LinkedIn) instead of joining the Riverside Studio.


W

WAV
The uncompressed audio of a participant's locally recorded track that you can download after the studio session.

Webinar
A scheduled studio session with audience registration, where people can sign up through a customized pre-registration form or join using a direct session link.


X

XLR connector
A cable used to connect certain microphones to an audio mixer or audio interface. The audio mixer or interface can then be connected to a computer, usually with a USB cable.


1, 2, 3, 4K

4K
A very high resolution video dimension of 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high, often referred to as '2160p (4K) video.' Compare it with Full HD 1920 × 1080, and Standard HD 1280 × 720.
